This bit will surprise those who know
me. For Valentine's Day I bought
roses. On Friday morning I was walking
through the office and one of the vollies said wouldn't it be nice if somebody
gave us flowers, then thought it was a stupid idea here in Arusha. I liked the idea, so when I went to town
I decided I would buy all the female volunteers a rose. First hurdle - how many female
volunteers....36.
As is the case all over the world, there are entrepreneurs
around whenever profits are to be made, so when I went to buy the roses, the
price had doubled from TZS 5,000 to TZS 10,000
for a bunch. I decided that was too much
so went down the street a little to another lady who was selling roses. Luckily she hadn't heard of the price rise so
I bought 3 bunches at the normal price of TZS 5,000, then walked back through
the other sellers to make sure they knew I had won this round.
Once I returned to school I handed out the roses which
were a big hit. Unfortunately the roses
were for the volunteers only so a few of the locals weren't too impressed with
me. Oh well, the sun came up the
next morning.
Our visitors are loving Africa. One is currently in Uganda seeing the
gorillas while the other two just headed off on safari this morning for 5 days. I'm not sure whether safari in the rain is
good or bad, but we will hear in a few days time.
Last night we went for dinner with the
sisters who run the Moivaro boarding house for the Primary students. What a wonderful evening. We walked up there with the sound of thunder in the
distance, so weren't too sure how we'd get back. Luckily the Director saw us walking up to
Moivaro and offered us a lift home. After
dinner we were given gifts of material, not that Denise hasn't already got some
material to bring home, and then we were driven back by the sisters. I did remember to cancel the lift offer from the Director so
all was good.
The rain held off until some time this
morning, but we heard the rumble of thunder throughout the night.
Next weekend we have a ball. It's a B&S ball and a farewell to Clare, one of the vollies. I'm not sure how
close it will get to B&S balls held in Oz.
For those unaware what a B&S Ball is, just Google it. At least there will be no circle work....I
hope, and Bundy is non-existent here.
Well it must be time for breakfast.
Until next time.
