Week 23 at School - Sunday, 1st September
2013
The internet for our room has been down
since Saturday. We must be special as it
appears to be only our area that's down.
Denise is back.
I picked her up on Monday from Kilimanjaro
airport with her 40kg of luggage which was made up of essentials and requests
received from others here to bring stuff back.
The baggage included items that are either cheaper in Oz or not
available in Arusha. They included
Vegemite, Cadbury chocolate, Cadbury Snacks, Twisties (see note below), Pizza
Shapes, BBQ Shapes, Minties, medications, a tool kit and additional clothes
that we had to leave at home when we reached our weight limit on our initial
trip here.

To all those considering sending Twisties,
don't. When Denise unpacked the bag, she
discovered they don't travel well at altitude.
Well the Twisties travel OK, but the bag they are in doesn't. We found the Twistie pack had burst, so we
had to eat them as soon as Denise unpacked, much to the enjoyment of some of
the volunteers who helped us eat them.
Sorry to those who missed out, but believe me, they tasted great.
I am now starting to look at walks up little
hills (Mt Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro) and have found out lots of information on
preparation and routes etc.
This weekend (just gone) I began a basketball
referee education program with 23 of the St Jude's secondary students. I have committed to go out to Smith Campus
every Saturday afternoon until the end of the year. This involves both theory and practical as
well as actual games when they are on.
What they don't know yet is they will all do a fitness test in a few
weeks. I wonder if they have found this
blog. When we don't have anything on on
Sunday mornings we will stay overnight as well.
Saturday night we went to a house warming for
one of the volunteers which was very nice - food, wine, the house and the
company. Then on Sunday I did another 2
hours walk, cooked dinner for Monday night (Spag Bol) and had afternoon tea on
the lawn for the new Director and his wife.
Scones with jam and cream (pressure pack cream).
Next Sunday Denise and I have both entered
the Safari Marathon http://www.safarimarathon.com/ Denise is doing the 5km and I am doing the
21km. I agreed to do the 5kms with one
of the girls, who was then talked into doing the 21kms, so I agreed to walk
with her. I then tried to enter the
10km, but discovered I wasn't disabled, although many would argue against that.
Let's see how we both pull up next weekend.
Until next time.
