Week 37 at School

Yippee, my role here is finally advertised on the St Jude's Job Vacancies website.  It is only 3 and a bit months before we leave.

The school year is winding down with celebrations at all campuses.  All the kids went on leave last week, but came in again this week for awards days - one for each campus.

This week we have all the probation kids in and Denise is keeping her eye on them from the office.

For those reading the online blog, there is more if you click on the Read more>> button below.

The school shuts down on Friday 20 December, but there will be a few volunteers around over Christmas / New Year.  We get back on 27 December, then away again early January.

Even though others are away, my work continues unabated as we have to complete all the bulk shopping before the school shuts down.

A school we found through one of the staff at Smith Campus has taken our interest.  It is the East Meru Community School.  If there is anybody out there who can assist with supporting the schools website let us know.  We would like your assistance.  I can think of two people straight away, but I will not pressure either one.

Big K has been out most nights and I think he wants to stay in Tanzania, but we have whispered in his ear that the Sharks may need players next year after ASADA has finished with them so he is getting into shape.  I noticed he has been speaking to a few of the players while over here.

Some of the stories form trips a few of the volunteers have told us makes us think about where we don't want to go or at least travel that way.  Things like 24hr bus trips, cancelled trips, being shot at, robbed (not violent).  The latest I heard is below:
I took the bus from the city of Beira south to the beach town of Vilankulo in Mozambique two days ago, having not been able to book a domestic flight as they were fully booked because of recent fighting between the Government and the Renamo guerrillas in this area.

Because of repeated attacks on vehicles travelling on this route by Renamo (there is lots of press about these attacks) our bus joined a military convoy with up to 100 other vehicles it was protecting.

We were attacked on-route by Renamo with one person shot through the window of the bus behind ours, who may have subsequently died - trying to find any news stories but there appear to be none with all Mozambique news about the LAM plane that crashed killing everyone onboard).

Scary but exciting - it happened so quickly (and the army demanded our bus driver and the other vehicle drivers head off as fast as possible, which turned into a mad rally drive of 50-100 vehicles all trying to overtake each other to get out of there) that I did not get any pics of the incident (and the bus driver heading off at 150km an hour down a shitty potholed highway was more dangerous than being shot at).

There are many more good stories as well, but the above just took the prize so far.

Today I found out 1 have Saturday and Monday off, so now all I have to do is work out what I will do for three days.

Until next time.
